MARINE – CLYDELearn more and apply

As part of our Marine sector, our 1,300 strong business based out of Clyde designs, integrates and supports some of the most complex systems. As the Ministry of Defence’s commercial partner at HMNB Clyde, Babcock delivers efficient, high quality and well-co-ordinated in-service engineering support. We do this by providing specialist support services, including managing critical infrastructure and nuclear facilities and by delivering operational maintenance, upgrades and repairs to support Royal Navy vessels, including Vanguard, Astute-Class nuclear submarines, and our new class submarines. Our waterfront activities at Clyde also include supporting naval surface ships, with responsibility for managing engineering work on base-ported Mine Warfare Vessels and carrying out emergency and scheduled maintenance on other visiting Royal Navy and foreign naval vessels.

 

To make the most of the opportunities Marine has to offer, you’ll need to have great technical skills along with the drive and aspiration to develop your career. Our graduates will have the opportunity to use their knowledge from either their engineering or business degrees to help us deliver our world-class programmes, develop new technologies and offer end to end solutions for our vast range of customers.

 

Your development programme will have a strong focus on undertaking a number of different placements which will be agreed in line with evolving business requirements and provide you with a high level of on the job training. You will also be given the fantastic opportunity to network and knowledge share your experiences through our modular two year Marine sector graduate development programme. Through these experiences you will come to understand the pivotal role you will play in our future success, how we function as an organisation, our internal culture, the importance of our customers and the wider business environment.

Your home base will be Clyde Dockyard, but some of your placements may be at other Marine sector locations. MARINE – PLYMOUTH OR KEYNSHAM (BRISTOL)Learn more and apply

As part of our Marine sector, our 5,500 strong business based out of Plymouth and Bristol (Keynsham) is a strategic partner to the MOD and the Royal Navy. We undertake 100% of submarine refits as well as 75% of UK surface fleet refits and 50% of fleet maintenance work. Half of the Royal Navy surface fleet is base-ported in Devonport, Plymouth including Type 23 frigates, the Amphibious Assault fleet and their hydrographic vessels.

As part of the Marine sector, our 1,200 strong Defence Systems Technology business based out of Bristol/Leicester, works on a range of exciting design, manufacture and support projects with a number of key clients domestically and internationally.

As part of our Marine sector, our 1,900 strong business based out of Rosyth designs, integrates and supports some of the most complex systems. With the world-class facility at Rosyth ideally located for access to the North Sea, it delivers an unbeatable range and quality of engineering services and a reputation for the successful delivery of large scale and complex projects. In addition to providing extensive docking and refitting services it is one of the largest waterside manufacturing facilities in the UK. Also located at Rosyth is Babcock LGE who are global market leaders in the design of cargo handling systems for liquefied gas carriers and the proud recipients of two Queen's Awards for Enterprise.

LANDLearn more and apply

The Land sector generates revenue of £1.6bn and employs over 12,000 skilled personnel around the globe. Together, we provide critical support for civil and military customers’ large-scale fleets of vehicle and equipment; and we deliver high quality technical training to upskill our clients’ workforce. We operate in challenging, and often highly regulated environments, providing engineering services that are critical, complex and often bespoke. Our graduates have the opportunity to work across multiple industries in the sector, gaining valuable insight into how we help different customers to overcome their particular challenges.

 

OUR LOCATIONS

Whilst we have locations throughout the UK, graduates tend to be based in our Greater London, Midlands or Scottish locations, though you will need to be ready and willing to move to other sites throughout your programme.

Our work ranges from design and build and working-life extensions of existing nuclear plant to the safe decommissioning and remediation of legacy sites. We’re looking for graduates with a wide range of qualities, including high technical skills, good interpersonal skills and a willingness to learn and adapt to new circumstances.

 

OUR LOCATIONS

You could be based in a number of locations. You’ll probably call Bristol, Leicester or Manchester home, but you could also work from client sites (including nuclear power stations, or Sellafield in Cumbria).

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

Working in a discipline of such fundamental importance means that you could work on anything. You could be on the team designing submarines or refitting warships. Equally, you could be working on one of our projects in oil and gas, or helping to build the UK’s next generation of nuclear power plants. The possibilities are endless.

Day-to-day, you could find yourself working on electrical power distribution or electrical control and instrumentation involving both analogue and digital systems. Our graduates get involved in everything from concept design and AutoCAD layouts to testing, installation, commissioning and handover to clients. You’ll be working within multidisciplinary teams, investigating solutions to engineering problems. You may also find yourself managing projects and leading your own team.

WHAT YOU’LL GET OUT OF IT

This is a great programme to give you a full overview of what we’re about. You’ll see how important the projects we work on are and how important electrical and electronic engineers like you are to our projects. You’ll enjoy a competitive starting salary of £28k - £30k and we’ll be completely behind you as you work towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.

 

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

A 2:2 BEng (Hons) degree in a related subject area (e.g. Electrical and Electronic Engineering) that is accredited by IET is vital. You’ll also need to satisfy the MOD’s security requirements (and may need to complete a medical assessment). For our Marine – Plymouth and Bristol programmes we also accept relevant degrees in Systems, Computing or IT disciplines.
