Dounreay was the UK's centre of fast reactor research and development from 1955 until 1994, and is now Europe's biggest nuclear site closure project. The scale of the project is truly epic: about 180 facilities were built at Dounreay. And as some of these buildings contain chemical and radiological hazards, special precautions are needed when cleaning them up – including remote working using robotic equipment. Our aim is to minimise waste and in the process establish Dounreay as the European reference site for nuclear decommissioning and closure.
