Although we have extensive nuclear expertise worldwide, in the UK our involvement in Britain’s nuclear power renaissance is primarily through Cavendish Nuclear – a wholly owned subsidiary of Babcock International.
These close links with Cavendish Nuclear – the UK’s leading nuclear services company are what enabled us to send Jessica [link to profile] on an 18-month graduate secondment to Whitehall, and the heart of the UK’s plans for new nuclear power.
Now her role involves building stakeholder engagement, including other major involved players such as Rolls-Royce and EDF, whilst ensuring the UK benefits economically. Although her English Literature degree has meant that her knowledge of some of the more technical aspects of nuclear physics is limited, her ability to absorb complex information and translate it for non-specialist audiences is proving invaluable.
Another side of her role involves raising awareness of the nuclear industry and the potential careers it offers among school and college students – and she’s found that she is able to talk about future power generation in language that they can understand.
I still pinch myself when I see Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament each morning. It’s always good to be able to communicate clearly with people rather than use jargon which goes over their heads.
